‘KAHAWAI’ 200MM / 90G
OOSH HAKU Stick Bait
Few fish are as unmistakably New Zealand as the Kahawai.
Fast, powerful, and constantly on the move, Kahawai (Australian Salmon) are a familiar sight in our coastal waters — and an equally familiar meal for some of the ocean's most formidable predators.
But even the most capable predators were once small, vulnerable juveniles.
Built on the proven HAKU timber platform, this colourway captures the intricate markings and subtle colour variations of a juvenile Kahawai (Australian Salmon).
Pearlescent silver tones, delicate golden highlights, and distinctive reddish-brown markings combine to create an exceptionally lifelike representation of one of Australasia's most recognisable coastal species.
For a large kingfish, a lone juvenile Kahawai isn't just another baitfish.
It's an opportunity.
Design philosophy
Adult Kahawai are powerful, agile predators in their own right.
But juvenile Kahawai occupy a very different position in the food chain.
Their smaller size, distinctive markings, and vulnerability make them a natural target for larger predators.
With its softly layered silver flanks, intricate natural markings, and subtle translucent finish, the Kahawai HAKU is designed to replicate the complexity of a juvenile baitfish without relying on exaggerated colours or artificial contrast.
No unnecessary flash.
No exaggerated colours.
No compromises on realism.
Just the unmistakable appearance of a juvenile Kahawai, presented where predators expect to find one.
Because sometimes the most convincing lure is simply the one that looks like it belongs.

Action & application
The 200mm / 90g HAKU is a true surface-oriented stick bait, designed for controlled, rhythmic retrieves rather than aggressive popper-style sweeps.
It responds best to:
- Long sweeps with measured cadence
- Short rips followed by brief pauses
- Consistent surface 'walk the dog' retrieves
But stick baiting is as much about the pause as it is the retrieve.
On the pause, the HAKU hangs almost vertical in the water column, holding its posture rather than falling away or lying flat.
For a following predator, this creates a moment of opportunity. The movement stops, the silhouette becomes clear, and the fish has time to assess what appears to be a vulnerable juvenile Kahawai.
A familiar shape.
A familiar colour.
A familiar opportunity.
That moment of hesitation can be all a predator needs to commit.
The pause doesn't kill the action.
It completes it.
Kahawai isn't about being an easy target.
It's about being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Lifelike + Lethal.
